Sustainability Solutions Playbook for Fashion Industry CEOs

OnePointFive supported an industry-wide initiative in the fashion space to develop a sustainability playbook for fashion and consumer product CEOs and sustainability leaders. The playbook outlined pragmatic, recommended actions for 2022, synthesized on one-pagers across seven action areas - climate change; raw materials; chemical usage; fair labor; recruitment & empowerment; sustainability measurement; innovation & circularity, and engaging consumers. The playbook included key industry goals, definitions, data & metrics, as well as departmental considerations, case studies, and existing initiatives and supporting organizations. 

In approaching this work, OnePointFive identified that despite the wealth of existing information available to guide companies on their sustainability journeys, there was still a lack of a holistic and standardized industry vision, set of standards, or roadmap. And while the fashion industry set forth ambitious targets for decarbonization, there has also been a gap between companies’ commitments, where stakeholders expect companies to be, and the concrete actions being taken.

OnePointFive mobilized an expert team including business & environment researchers, industry experts, and writers to:

  • Review and synthesize findings from 90+ sources, including but not limited to: industry standards (e.g., UNFCCC Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action); current and upcoming regulations (e.g., the EU’s Sustainable Products Initiative); reporting regimes (e.g., GHG Protocol, SASB); existing NGO initiatives and supporting organizations (e.g., Textile Exchange); sustainability reports and publications; and public commitments (e.g., Science Based Targets) 

  • Map connections and thematic insights in Miro, aggregated into seven high impact and high priority ESG areas relevant for the fashion industry, namely climate change; raw materials; chemical usage; fair labor, recruitment and empowerment; sustainability measurement; innovation & circularity; and engaging consumers

  • Outline leading practices, industry goals, metrics, departmental considerations, case studies and resources; call for stakeholder alignment on leading solutions; and develop discrete recommendations to address companies at varying stages of maturity in their sustainability journeys

  • Develop a holistic strategy for CEOs - including 21 recommended actions in 2022 - and comprehensive one-page reference guides for CEOs and sustainability leaders synthesizing industry goals, definitions, data & metrics, details actions, departmental considerations, case study examples, and supporting initiatives and organizations  

The final playbook, Scaling ESG Solutions in Fashion was showcased at WWD’s Sustainability Forum 2022, an annual industry-leading summit, involving 130+ attendants, and 25+ Fashion C-suite and senior executives. Our work will continue in supporting these fashion leaders to take action from the playbook recommendations.
