How Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) Help Prevent Climate Change?

If we look back to 20 years ago, both climate change and artificial intelligence were talked about far less. AI seemed like a far-off fantasy only depicted in sci-fi films, and climate change was very well known amongst scientists, sustainability experts, and the most responsible parties, yet hadn’t made its way into the mainstream discourse like it has today. But what if AI and the climate crisis are more intertwined than we realize?

There’s no doubt that to prevent our planet from warming more than it already has, we need rapid and far-reaching change in our global systems. We must limit the planet’s average global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius or face worse environmental consequences than what we are already seeing. To help every company, brand, government, and organization around the globe fully decarbonize their operations and learn how to grow sustainably without destroying the planet, we need all the tools and resources available to us. Thus, with the birth of widespread consumer-facing AI, some companies are already combining the best of both worlds: climate solutions and intelligent automation.

Companies Using AI To Fight Climate Change

Unravel Carbon is one of these climate tech startups bringing artificial intelligence to the climate solutions landscape. They are building off of a $7.4 million seed round and are serving dozens of global organizations on their sustainability journeys to help them measure, reduce, and report their carbon emissions whilst on a mission to help cut one gigaton of carbon emissions by 2030.

OnePointFive (OPF) provides a pathway to future-proof businesses while helping organizations imagine and implement future growth strategies that lead in a climate economy. Thus, the potential this technology has to make a real positive difference in our world is clear. Along with helping dozens of clients navigate key environmental solutions, OPF is also training the next generation of expert climate consultants via the OPF Academy, a consulting accelerator focused on leveling-up member’s sustainability consulting toolkits and understanding of key solutions, in which Unravel Carbon’s own Co-Founder Grace Sai had the pleasure of speaking in.

While both companies are strong one their own, they’re even stronger together. Naina Verghese, Director of Strategy and Growth at Unravel Carbon, says it best: "We are thrilled to partner with the OnePointFive team. After our initial conversation, we knew we had found mission-aligned partners with whom we could offer complementary sustainability solutions with comprehensive coverage across the North American and Asian economies."

How Can We Best Utilize AI Climate Solutions?

By training artificial intelligence to properly account for greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon and methane, organizations will be able to better identify where they can improve their sustainability. Once this knowledge is in hand, climate consultants at OPF and those who have taken the OPF Academy will be better equipped to provide the very best solutions possible.

"We are excited about what is possible through our partnership with Unravel Carbon, through tech-enabled services for organization's GHG accounting needs - meeting these needs in the Global South & beyond, tackling the hardest to measure Scope 3 emissions." - Neil Yeoh, Founder at OnePointFive.

To kick things off, OPF and Unravel Carbon are having a LinkedIn Live event on April 27th, 12:00-1:00 pm EDT where we’ll discuss the best approach to tackling sustainability within the fashion industry.
